Samyang Corporation’s Allulose is expanding its market position as more consumers are looking for healthy and safe foods during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Samyang Corporation (Vice President Song Ja-ryang), a food and chemical affiliate of the Samyang Group (Chairman Kim Yoon), announced on June 15 that the company will be expanding the applicability of specialty sweetener product Allulose, in guidance to the latest guilt-free product trend. Guilt-free product refers to a product which has a healthy concept which can be enjoyed without feeling guilt as it has fewer calories and more nutrients for individual body.

Allulose is referred to as the optimal next-generation sweetener as it produces similar sweet taste like sugar by using common ingredients such as figs and grapes while maintaining its calorie approximately zero. Although it is a rare type of sugar existing in extremely small quantities in nature, it can be mass-produced with enzyme technology. Samyang Group has sold liquid Allulose under the brand TRUSWEET since 2017.

Samyang Corporation’s Allulose has since expanded its scope by being introduced to dairy products in 2018 and eventually by being applied to the “Bulletproof Coffee.” Bulletproof Coffee refers to a type of low-carb, high-fat diet coffee that includes unsalted butter and oil. Recently, Dong-A Otsuka also launched the renewal of “Oran-C,” which has a 29% reduced amount of calories compared to the existing product, by using Samyang Corporation’s Allulose. Furthermore, as Allulose is also used in Care Food lunch boxes, a product known for its reduced sugar and balanced calories, the demand for Allulose continues to rise in the Korean food industry along with the guilt-free trend.

The number of Allulose products is also increasing in the global market in line with low sugar trends, allowing for the Allulose market to continuously grow. From this year, the US made it mandatory to label sugar on the packages of food sold in America, however as Allulose is excluded from this mandatory labeling law, the market for alternative sweeteners such as Allulose is predicted to grow further. To keep up with this prediction, Samyang Corporation has participated in the global food fair IFT every year since 2017, showcasing products such as Allulose cookies, jellies, almond milk, actively promoting Allulose in the global market.

Meanwhile, Samyang Corporation’s Allulose has been recognized for its safety in the global market by being registered on Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March this year. GRAS is a list of food products recognized by the FDA as being safe for human consumption. As GRAS is internationally accepted, Samyang Corporation is planning to accelerate their process of targeting the global market with its newly earned GRAS registration.

An official from Samyang Corporation stated, “As the Liquor Tax Act was recently amended to allow Allulose in alcoholic beverages such as soju and takju, the market for Allulose is growing. Samyang Corporation will take lead in the Allulose market within Korea and outside of Korea off of its un-paralleled technology.”
